Cling to Life
Chapter #20
After a little while Yuhed went down to the main room and got breakfast, then left soon afterwards to see to their horses and start buying supplies.

"All alone," Forest remarked, her bacon barely touched on the plate, a warm bisket in her hand. Yuhed had made the girls take their medicine before she had left.

"Yeah, it's quiet," Matt agreed, putting butter on his own bisket.

"Not really," Quenum bit into a large round purple fruit of some sort. It looked as though she hadn't had very much sleep last night.

"What do you mean?" Forest asked, setting her bisket aside.

"Just what I said. Don't you hear it?"

"Hear what?" Matt bit into his bisket.

"The... the sounds. The people. They're everywhere. They won't go away," Quenum shook her head as though to dispell the thoughts.

Matt exchanged glances with Forest.

-Are you sure you're okay?- Forest said, reverting to mindspeach because it was a little easier to convey her feelings and what she wanted.

"Don't yell," Quenum said, covering her ears.

"Covering your ears won't help, and what do you mean 'Don't yell'? I wasn't yelling."

"Yes, you were."

Matt intterupted the two of them. "Am I just seeing things, or is an army to the east?"

Forest turned on him sharply, almost nocking him out of the bed. "What do you mean?"

"Just what I said. Here, look," he took her and Quenum into his mental guiding 'hand' and took them towards the east.

Indeed, after a few leagues of wood, Forest saw a large gathering of men, each carring weapons. They seemed rather comfortable stationed there, as though they had no intention of moving. The men seemed to strech for leagues.

"Damn," was all Forest could think to say.

Matt nodded. "I sure hope they are on the good side. Otherwise how are we going to get through? That's the direction we're supposed to be going. What do you think, Quenum?"

Quenum was silent.

"Quenum?" Forest asked.

"Yeah, I suppose there is an army over there," Quenum replied finally. "I really wouldn't know."

"What do you mean?"

"I mean I can't See anything, or at least not much. I could See the begining of the woods alright, but..." Quenum trailed off.

"So, you mean Matt and I can do this, but you can't?"

Quenum nodded, then suddenly shuttered and tried to push herself up off the bed. "I- I have to..." she cut off as she fell to the floor. Matt got up and helped her up as best he could, supporting her so that she did not fall.

She tried to push away from him. "I have to go."

"You have to go where?" Forest asked, also trying to get herself up, but finding that her strenghth had left her.

"I don't know. That way," Quenum pointed towards the left wall. "I think.." she closed her eyes. "I think, four rooms down. Use that Seeing thing you do, you're better than me. Someone's in trouble."

Forest closed her eyes for a moment or two and then opened them. "I don't see anyone in trouble."

"There is!" Quenum insisted, stuggling against Matt's hold. "Please, let me go,"

"Even if I do, you won't get very far," Matt said, keeping his hold. "I'm holding you up right now. If I let go you'll just fall."

"Then take me there, please, I'll prove it to you."

Matt glanced at Forest who nodded. -Keep in touch like this.-

-Okay,- he replied, and lifted Quenum up, carring her out the door to their room.

"Which door?" Matt asked quietly.

"I'm not sure, keep going."

Matt kept walking, going as fast as he could through the hall, carring her and making little sound.

"Stop," Quenum almost hissed.

Matt stopped short in front of a door. "In there," Quenum said softly. "In there. It's the dirty man."

She could wait no longer. She pushed herself out of Matt's arms and burst open the door, falling to the floor as the door opened.

There in the room was the man who had been sitting at the table beside him in the main room, looking enraged. Next to him was a small... creature, was all Quenum could think to call it.

The creature was whining a rather dispairing wail, a chain tied around it's neck, and an amulet around it's left foreclaw. The amulet was glowing a brilliant red and the creature was clawing at it franticly, as though it pained it to have it on.

"Let Kirk go," the thing wailed to the man and his new unexpected visitors.
